Gum recession is very common problem for many people, and if it is left untreated it can cause infections and cavities.

Most people don’t even recognize or know that they have gum recession because it occurs over time.

Why Do Gums Recede?

We always remind patients that there are a number of factors that can cause your gums to recede. Some of the most common are:

Periodontal diseases

Bacterial gum infections, such as gum disease can destroy the gum tissue and the supporting bones that hold those teeth in place. Gum disease is the primary cause of gum recession.

Genes

Some people are more susceptible to gum disease. 30% of the population may be predisposed to gum disease, because of their genes, regardless of how well they care for their teeth.

Aggressive tooth brushing

If you brush your teeth too hard and too your could cause damage to your gums. It can cause the enamel on your teeth to wear down and push away the gums.

Poor Dental Care

Inadequate brushing and flossing can contribute to receding gums. If you miss dental appointments or go to long without caring properly for your teeth, this can contribute to receding gums and dental infections.

Hormonal changes

If there are changes in the female hormone levels for example during a woman’s lifetime such as puberty or during pregnancy or menopause, this can cause gums to be more sensitive and more vulnerable.

Tobacco products

Smoking can damage your gum tissue and cause sticky plaque on the teeth.

Your Oregon City dental professional, Dr Brett L. Johnson, suggests the best way to prevent gum disease and gum recession is to properly care for your teeth. Brush your teeth, floss and rinse with mouthwash twice a day.
